Best Buffalo Bills player to wear #7: Doug Flutie

Doug Flutie had one of the greatest plays in college football history when he launched the Hail Mary to win the game against the Miami Hurricanes on primetime television. A young Brent Musberger was on the call and it is a moment you got to see if you haven’t done so already.

Flutie had played for Chicago and New England before stopping in Buffalo for his NFL stint. After leaving New England, Flutie played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) from 1990-97, winning three championships and being named the most outstanding player a total of six times. Where Flutie gets surrounded in some controversy was in the 1999 season where the Buffalo Bills would play the Tennessee Titans in the “Music City Miracle” game.

What was a befuddling move by former head coach Wade Philips is that he started ‘Scorigami’ star Rob Johnson over Flutie.Here’s what went into that:

  •  Flutie had a 10-5 record as a starter that season, earning another playoff berth
  • Flutie was rested the week before, and Johnson lit up the Indianapolis Colts
    • This game was irrelevant as Buffalo could not improve their seeding for the playoffs
  • Philips would go on to admit that years later that Owner Ralph Wilson demanded this change

That would prove to be a very costly mistake, as the Buffalo Bills went into football purgatory after that and didn’t make the playoffs until Tyrod Taylor got them there. Flutie would go on to keep playing for quite a few more years and is one of the more beloved stories in the NFL. Other players to wear #7 were J.P Losman and Cardale Jones. Fun!
