Buffalo Bills assistant coaches and their impact on the offense
Offensive Line Coach: Bobby Johnson
Bobby Johnson was brought into Buffalo in 2019 as the offensive line coach tasked to rebuild the Bills offensive line. Johnson has had success in his first two seasons already making improvements to the Bills offensive line play whilst dealing with some injuries to significant players.
Johnson helped the Bills offensive line cut down in sacks allowed from 40 in 2019 to only 26 in 2020. The number of sacks allowed would be even smaller if it were not for one very off game vs. Seattle where Buffalo allowed a total of seven sacks.
While the Bills running game has taken a slight step backward that can be contributed more to injuries and poor scheme fits as opposed to Johnson’s coaching. Regardless, Johnson has a big year in 2021. The Bills bring back all their starters from last season and there are players along the line that Buffalo needs to have improved.
Assistant Offensive Line Coach: Ryan Wendell
Ryan Wendell spent eight seasons as a lineman in the NFL playing for both the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers. Wendell was hired as a coach for Buffalo in 2019 and promoted to assistant offensive line coach in 2020.
Wendell has been praised for his coaching ability and is only two years into his coaching career. As a former player, Wendell can relate to almost everything that his players go through during an NFL season.
Wendell also was coached by Dante Scarnecchia who is widely known as one of the greatest offensive line coaches of all time. Wendell is super knowledgeable and has some extremely valuable experience in the NFL which brings some strong value to the Buffalo Bills offensive line.
