Not everyone is excited about Joe Brady being promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach of the Buffalo Bills. It’s not a total surprise to Bills Mafia. It was a polarizing decision to fire Sean McDermott in the first place, given the Bills’ overall body of success in recent years.

Of course, no one expects quarterback Josh Allen to be lumped in with those who don’t believe the hire was the right move. After all, he played a part in vetting the coaching candidates, and after working closely with his new head coach in different capacities over the past four seasons, if anyone should be comfortable with the hire, it’s the best quarterback in the NFL.

Still, Allen’s perspective is skewed from an offensive vantage point. Brady’s responsibilities extend to the entire roster now. On Tuesday, Allen joined NFL Network’s Super Bowl LIVE panel and explained why Brady is ready to meet that challenge head-on.

Bills QB Josh Allen expresses excitement for Joe Brady taking over as head coach

“He’s as real as it gets. He’s a leader of men. He’s a brilliant offensive mind, he’s been around a lot of, you know, brilliant offensive minds throughout his career. Yeah, and I’m very excited, very happy for him. He’s worked really hard to get this opportunity, and we’re looking forward to how this is going to look in the future.”

Allen mentioned that it’s strange to him to even refer to Brady with a formal “Coach Brady” after the past four seasons, but again, that’s a tandem that has helped to elevate Allen’s game over the years. Allen won his first MVP award two seasons ago, and rivaled his statistics from that season in 2025 despite regression across the board at receiver and poorer pass protection.

But anyone who is still out on Brady’s hiring might not be taking in the full scope of what he’s already accomplished. While there are offensive issues, McDermott’s defenses consistently played a role in Buffalo’s shortcomings, and that’s what Brady has proven to Bills Mafia he’s capable of addressing.

Hiring Jim Leonhard as his new defensive coordinator does bring about a period of transition relative to the scheme change and matching the personnel. But it’s one of the stronger hires you’ll find around the league, as Leonhard has already proven himself to be one of the top defensive minds in college football over the past decade.

With Brady already having the full confidence of the star quarterback and building an impressive coaching staff, all that’s left for Brady to prove is on the field this Fall after he and Beane finalize the roster this offseason. If the Bills don’t skip a beat with Brady at the helm, as it seems Allen expects them to, then all of the detractors against Brady’s hiring will be silenced with a quickness.
