Bills' biggest remaining offseason task should have been done months ago

For years now, the Buffalo Bills have lacked a true No. 1 receiver. Since Stefon Diggs left, fans have been clamoring for Brandon Beane to address the position. He finally did so this offseason, trading a second-round draft pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for veteran wideout DJ Moore.

Moore is a dangerous receiver and should be an important piece of Joe Brady's offense. But he's not enough.

The Bills should still be looking to add one more veteran receiver to the unit this offseason. If they don't, they risk entering yet another season with the position resembling a weak link in the offense.

Bills still need more receiver help after D.J. Moore trade

In a recent article, Bleacher Report NFL analyst Brent Sobleski laid out each NFL team's to-do list for the remainder of the offseason. For the Bills, he listed implementing Jim Leonhard's scheme, extending O'Cyrus Torrence's contract, and adding another veteran wide receiver.

Sobleski said, "Surprisingly, the organization still has a lot of faith in its wide receivers, though the team added DJ Moore and rookie Skyler Bell. Instead of stopping there and hoping Joshua Palmer and Keon Coleman give the team more than last year, the Bills should still be in the wide receiver market."

The Bills' receiver room is passable. Moore has shown throughout his career that he can be the lead pass catcher in a quality offense. It's important to note that Buffalo used more 22 personnel sets than any other team in the NFL last season, so they typically field fewer receivers than the average team. Still, they need to have pass catchers of varying skill sets to have a well-rounded offense.

Moore thrives with the ball in his hands. He struggles against press man coverage, though. Chicago often had to put him on the move before the snap or use him in the slot to put him in favorable situations. Likewise, Khalil Shakir is at his best when on the move. These two players can coexist, but they can't be the entirety of Buffalo's passing attack.

The Bills need to add a true outside "X" receiver to complete their receiver room. Currently, Joshua Palmer and Keon Coleman are set to compete for that role. There aren't star receivers in that mold on the free agent market, but Buffalo could add a veteran like DeAndre Hopkins to get some snaps on the outside.

This problem has been lingering for far too long. One more signing could finally put it to rest.
