Every team in the NFL is looking to be one of the best and become a true Super Bowl contender year-in and year-out. The Buffalo Bills are in that tier as serious contenders who have a great shot at making and winning the Super Bowl. While they have constantly been knocking on the door, they have yet to open it and play in the league’s final game in February.

As long as Josh Allen is playing at a high level, the Bills will always have a shot at making the Super Bowl. However, so do other teams that have ascending or superstar quarterbacks. The Super Bowl is Allen's next biggest accomplishment that he is looking for. He already has an MVP award, making him one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

When it comes to the MVP award, it is an award that solidifies who was the best overall player in the entire league. Allen proved that he was in 2024, in which he rightfully was voted as the MVP that year. Going into this season, the Bills are set to go up against five specific players that could be first-time MVP winners, per Lou Scataglia of NFL Spin Zone.

Scataglia listed seven different players who could be serious contenders for the award, and five of them are on the Bills’ schedule.

Bills set to face 5 potential first-time MVP candidates in 2026

Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers

The Bills will go up against Jordan Love and the Packers in Week 15 on Sunday Night Football up in Green Bay. After a dynamic 2023 season, Love hasn’t been the same quarterback. He has not been bad, but he hasn’t been up to the superstar level that Green Bay hoped he would be by now.

Love hasn’t been bad the last two years, but not up to the MVP level either. There is a sense of urgency on the Packers to move more in the right direction in all kinds of aspects of their team. Love is definitely going to be closely watched, and it will be interesting to see how he responds.

Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers

Early on in the season, the Bills will host Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3. This is a great advantage that the BIlls have, but Herbert has Mike McDaniel as his offensive coordinator, and everyone knows that while McDaniel may not be head coach material, he is definitely a dynamic play caller.

Herbert always finds himself as one of the best quarterbacks that falls short. Whether it’s because of a lack of weapons, or not having a great offensive line in front of him, Herbert is always facing some kind of challenge. However, he still has a ton of talent and if he and McDaniel can click sooner than later, he could very well be a serious MVP candidate.

Bo Nix, Denver Broncos

Bo Nix and the Broncos broke the hearts of Bills Mafia in the playoffs last year, and had it not been for him suffering an unexpected injury, the Broncos most likely would have made it to the Super Bowl. Going into his third season, the Broncos gifted Nix by acquiring Jaylen Waddle from the Miami Dolphins.

This is a very similar setup to when the Bills acquired Stefon Diggs from the Minnesota Vikings back in 2020. Allen was on a rookie deal and the Bills landed him a solidified dangerous receiver who helped him take the next step. Denver is hoping that Nix can take that Josh Allen-like step with Waddle coming into the picture.

Jared Goff, Detroit Lions

The Lions’ offense took a step back last season with the absence of Ben Johnson. Yet, Jared Goff still was highly productive with over 4,500 yards and 34 touchdowns. At the same time, it didn’t translate to success for Detroit as they missed out on the playoffs. With Drew Petzing coming into the picture as the play caller, Goff gets an upgrade and he has his main weapons coming back as well.

Drake Maye, New England Patriots

Right in the AFC East, Drake Maye has already become an MVP candidate as he was the runner-up last year to Matthew Stafford with the Los Angeles Rams. Now granted, Maye benefited from having an easy schedule which helped perform well. Going into this season, that won’t be the case. He will be tested and we will see if last year was a preview of what is to come, or if last year was just a year where he got all the breaks in the world.
