Since the 2020 season, the AFC East had one featured quarterback that was the best in the division. In fact, he still is, and his name is Josh Allen. Now, Allen will have some serious competition for the foreseeable future when he and the Bills take on Drake Maye and the New England Patriots.
Maye has only been in the league for two years, heading into his third, and he managed to reach the Super Bowl before Allen ever did. At the same time, there are plenty of factors that helped Maye reach it. His path won’t be easy anymore.
That being said, Maye was an MVP candidate and had it not been for Matthew Stafford having a better season, he most likely would have won the award in just his second season. There’s not denying that Maye had an outstanding season. But the fact that people are already saying that he is one of the best after one season where he faced weak competition and got embarrassed in the Super Bowl is hilarious.
Latest NFL power ranking has Bills fans laughing at Drake Maye placement
Lou Scataglia from NFL Spin Zone created a power rankings list of ranking every AFC team by their best player, and not having Josh Allen at the top of the list is ridiculous. Not only does Scataglia have Allen ranked at No. 3, but Patriots’ quarterback Drake Maye was ranked at the top of the list.
Scataglia about Allen:
"Josh Allen was the 2024 MVP and continued his high level of play in 2025, also cementing himself, yet again, as one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in NFL history. Allen and the Bills again fell short of the goal, but he's been a high-end offensive weapon for most of his career and is, at times, impossible to stop." said Scataglia.
Scataglia about Maye:
"Maye did take a lot of sacks, but that honestly makes his production in 2025 even more impressive. The New England Patriots weren't able to seal the deal in the Super Bowl, but it's hard to not look at what Maye did as being flat-out incredible. Sure, a slight regression could be coming in 2026 due to how easy their schedule was in 2025, but Maye was a top-3 player in the league last year and takes the top spot in our power rankings." said Scataglia.
One breakout year doesn’t all of a sudden mean that someone is automatically the best player in the conference, or even the league. There has to be consistency over time and Maye is only entering his third season in the league. This isn’t to say that Maye won’t be a superstar in his career but right now, Allen is by far the better quarterback who has had tougher competition. Once Maye has the same path as Allen has had for years, then there can be a discussion.
