The Buffalo Bills have officially finished the regular season undefeated at home. They sent the New York Jets back to New Jersey in more shambles than they already were coming into Week 17. The Bills put up 40 points before the Jets got on the board and the Bills ended up winning 40-14 to move to 13-3.
This game was a complete beatdown that the Bills delivered and they were gifted with the #2 seed in the AFC. After next week’s game in New England, the Bills will be back in Orchard Park for the wild card round, but they will have to wait to see who they will be hosting.
There was a lot of good that came from this game for the Bills, and it was a fantastic cleanup game from last week against the Patriots. Which players stood out the most in the win, and who underperformed?
4 winners (and 1 loser) from the Bills’ win against the Jets
Winners:
QB Josh Allen
The most obvious choice for the top winner of this game is the future MVP of the league, Josh Allen. Not only did he tie Thurman Thomas for the most rushing touchdowns in franchise history, but he also became the first player in NFL history to record 40+ touchdowns in five consecutive seasons.
Finishing with two total touchdowns and reaching these milestones gives Allen another push in the right direction to lock up his first career MVP award.
WR Tyrell Shavers
After a lot of training camp hype back in August, Bills fans finally got to see what Tyrell Shavers could do in a game. They didn’t see a ton of action, but they had the opportunity to watch Shavers take a simple screen pass 69 yards all the way to the house to put the Bills up 40-0.
Shavers might have just earned himself a future roster spot on the Bills based on that one play. He will be a name that fans should keep an eye on throughout the playoffs as well as next season.
DE A.J. Epenesa
No one outside of Buffalo is talking about A.J. Epenesa and they should be. He is constantly creating pressure and he has vastly improved his run-stopping ability. Epenesa was responsible for four total tackles and a sack on Aaron Rodgers that resulted in a safety to give the Bills a 9-0 lead.
DT Jordan Phillips
It seems like whenever Jordan Phillips isn’t in Buffalo, he doesn’t play well. When he is in Buffalo, he performs at a high level and he did it again today. He helped take on double teams against the Jets’ offensive line and he also recorded his first interception since 2016. Phillips was an unsung hero for the Bills in Week 17.
Loser:
WR Keon Coleman
The Bills’ rookie wideout had one of the best touchdowns grabs of the day when he leaped up into the air for a Buffalo touchdown, but he had a rough day overall. Josh Allen targeted Keon Coleman the most (7), yet he only came down with 3 catches for 27 yards. There were times when Coleman was hit right in the hands and he dropped the ball. He’ll need to improve that going into the postseason.
