Defensive Tackle – How does Star Lotulelei look in practice?

One of the more talked about players this week is likely going to be defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, and he was a player I identified as a player that fans should be paying attention to this week. The veteran defensive tackle has yet to appear in OTAs this offseason but has been working out on his own.

However, it has been close to a year that the coaching staff has had Lotulelei in an organized team practice as he opted out of this past season due to the pandemic. While he looks quick in workout videos on Twitter, the coaching staff will likely want a closer look in practice.

While Star Lotulelei is a big question mark at the position, there are other roster questions at this position. The biggest is if Lotulelei doesn’t give the team confidence he can return to his level of play in 2019, do they have another player who can step up? The hope would be that it could be Harrison Phillips, who started slowly last year but finished strong.

One of the reasons for the slow start could be his recovery from an ACL injury in 2019. He recently talked about how he closer to feeling like his true self. If this is the case, Phillips is certainly a player who could have a big season in a pivotal year of his career.
