The first Scorigami win for the Buffalo Bills: 1979 vs the New York Jets

Under Chuck Knox’s leadership, the Buffalo Bills survived a shootout with the New York Jets. After a field goal festival in the first quarter, the scoring got underway.  The Jets took off with two touchdowns on the ground from Tom Newton to build a 24-12 lead.

That’s when Bills wide receiver Jerry Butler had an amazing day. In the second and third quarter combined, he had 4 touchdowns. He’d finished with 10 catches for 255 yards and 4 TD’s, including one lucky TD after the ball bounced off a defender’s hands and he took it in for a score. Butler had scores of 75, 74, 9, and 5 yards.  Butler and QB Joe Ferguson were on another level that day.

The Bills went on to win 46-31, as sefensive lineman Fred Smerlas had a scoop-and-score fumble return touchdown as well. It was neat that this video exists on YouTube for us to see. Everyone should watch more NFL history, as the graphics, the stories and players are just unforgettable.

Bills record so far: 1-2-1.
