Buffalo Bills Trade Away Sammy Watkins and Ronald Darby

Let’s talk about what this means (and doesn’t mean) for the quarterback position.

It’s a bad day for Tyrod Taylor. Watching every Bills game for the past two years, I can tell he trusts Watkins more than a child trusts their mommy or daddy. He also is probably going to be out of a starting quarterback job next year.

Why’s that? Because after these trades, Buffalo now enters the 2018 draft with two first-round, second-round and third-round draft picks each. That’s six players that will be Buffalo Bills before the third round is over. They probably feel richer than Scrooge McDuck swimming in his money at this point.

But do they plan of using all six of those draft picks? They certainly could cause the Bills roster needs rebuilding. Or they could package a few of them in a trade of their own, one that could allow them to trade up and get a quarterback.

It’s obvious to everyone and their mother that 2018 is a good draft class for QBs. The marquee names are USC’s Sam Darnold, Wyoming’s Josh Allen, and UCLA’s Josh Rosen. One of those is almost certainly going to the Jets, and there’s the possibility that the 49ers, Browns, and Jaguars could be looking at those three names with envy as well.

How do the Bills get around that? Even after this trade, they still have enough talent where they won’t be able to out-suck any of those teams and get a higher draft pick.

All they have to do is sell the farm in draft picks to move up.

It’s gutsy. If it blows up in their fac, you bet Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane are getting fired for it. But for a team without a true franchise quarterback (unless Tyrod shows something truly special this year), it’s the only option.

What we’re seeing is the first step in a long, painful rebuild folks. The only hope is that 2017 won’t make you cringe too much.
