What the New Tyrod Taylor Contract Really Means
As the dust settles from free agency, the Tyrod Taylor restructure means his future with the Buffalo Bills will remain in question for at least one more season.
The Buffalo Bills‘ coaching staff and front office haven’t been sold on Tyrod Taylor. Sorry Tyrod believers, he hasn’t proved to be the franchise quarterback, yet.
Two weeks ago, Taylor and the Bills came to an agreement on a restructured contract. The new contract cut his pay, eliminated three years from his contract and added another team option after the 2017 season. His 2016 performance wasn’t stellar, but it wasn’t a dumpster fire. He threw 17 touchdowns, only 6 interceptions and just a click over 3,000 yards.
Commendable numbers, but you don’t win in today’s NFL with that type of quarterback play.
As the Buffalo Bills moved closer to the deadline to pick up his previous option, there was an expectation of a long list of teams willing to bring out the Brinks truck. Unfortunately for Taylor, that was not the case. Adisa Bakari, Tyrod Taylor’s agent, found out quickly that Taylor’s services weren’t as highly sought after as they had both originally thought. Still, Taylor was a lock to find a new home if the Bills let him walk, just not with a big payday like his agent wanted.
Taylor does deserve some love for wanting to win for the city and die-hard fans of Buffalo. Taking the pay cut and another offseason of uncertainty proves that it isn’t all about him.

Taylor still has a lot to prove to the front office and the newly acquired coaching staff to earn himself yet another blockbuster deal. A running back like Lesean McCoy, a healthy Sammy Watkins and an offensive line that has been solid yet underrated, benefits him in a big way.
Buffalo Bills’ new offensive coordinator, Rick Dennison, runs an offense that is molded for a quarterback like Tyrod Taylor. Play action, rollouts, more time under center and longer dropbacks will be a big part of the offense this upcoming year. For an athletic and strong-armed quarterback like Taylor, this should be a friendly system for him.
Whether you are a believer or nonbeliever of the unproven quarterback, you should expect his play to escalate to another level in 2017.
This situation was clearly the best for the Buffalo Bills in the long run. With a draft class as weak as this one at quarterback, there weren’t many other viable options. However, the 2018 draft class looks stronger than ever at the quarterback position.
The Bills might be able to find their guy for the next 10-15 years if Taylor doesn’t end up being the one to bring them to the promise land.
