When this coming Thursday arrives, the wait will come to an end for fans of the Buffalo Bills. After months of a bunch of changes within the organization, fans will now get to see the vision of the future of the team that will be led by new head coach, Joe Brady.
It will be the first time since 2018 where Sean McDermott is not in the draft room. The process will be carried out by Brady and Brandon Beane, who has faced a ton of criticism the last couple of years due to how this roster has been built up. Well, now is his chance for a fresh start with a new head coach.
The Bills are in quite the predicament for the draft because they only have seven picks, but they are missing a second round pick. So, after their first round selection (No. 26), they will have to wait until the end of the third round (No. 91) to make another draft selection. Now, there is an easy case to be made on why the Bills should trade back.
However, I am here to tell you one major reason why the Bills should stay put at No. 26 and wait out the draft until the third round.
Bills have one major reason why they must stay put at No. 26
It’s really quite simple…rather than trading back and missing out on potential game-changers, Buffalo is in a spot where despite them needing to fill up some holes on the roster, taking the best player available would be the best choice for them.
Now granted, there is no need for Buffalo to draft a player at a position that they clearly don’t need. However, if there is an edge rusher, linebacker, defensive lineman, or wide receiver that is clearly the best available player, then Buffalo should make the call to bring them in and move on to the third round.
There have been too many times where Buffalo has drafted for a position of need early on and it has come back to haunt them at different times. If the Bills truly want to change up what they have been doing for years now, it should include their draft strategy.
I’m not saying that Buffalo shouldn’t consider a trade back if the compensation is great for them, but there is no reason why the Bills should gain draft capital and miss out on a prospect that could provide an immediate impact.
The only thing worse than trading back and losing out on a player is missing out on the draft picks that you gained as well.
