In Sports Illustrated's latest 53-man roster projection, one notable name was left off the roster. That was second-year running back Frank Gore Jr. Despite looking good against the Giants in the Bills' preseason opener, Gore Jr. is not projected to crack the Week 1 53-man roster.
The 5-8, 195-pound running back spent most of last season on the practice squad after being signed as an undrafted free agent. It appears he may be destined for a second year on the practice squad, unless something changes.
The projection has the Bills keeping three running backs around. James Cook will start, with Ray Davis and Ty Johnson returning to back him up. Instead of keeping a fourth running back, the Bills are projected to carry a sixth wide receiver, Tyrell Shavers, in addition to fullback Reggie Gilliam.
Should the Bills keep RB Frank Gore Jr. for Week 1?
If the Bills do decide to keep a fourth running back on the roster, Gore Jr. should be the choice. The son of five-time pro-bowler Frank Gore was excellent last week against the Giants. While he only rushed for 21 yards on five carries, he also caught five passes for 50 yards, proving his versatility.
Gore's push to make the team probably comes down to whether the Bills think it is more beneficial to keep an extra running back or an extra reciever. He'll need to continue to prove himself in the Bills next two preseason games.
He'll also want to prove himself on special teams. Every roster spot is valuable, and the Bills will be looking to fill the back end of the roster with guys who are versatile. If Gore can prove himself a versatile player capable of filling multiple roles, he can set himself apart from the competition.
Gore Jr likely will end up on the practice squad if he does not make the roster, meaning he could still contribute for the Bills at some point this season.
