Despite having the NFL's best quarterback, the Buffalo Bills' offensive success has been predicated on the running game. This is partially because Josh Allen, the reigning MVP, is one of the position's biggest dual-threats, but also, because of James Cook and his emergence the last two seasons.
Unfortunately, after initially reporting to training camp and being with the team despite his ongoing contract negotiations, Cook has decided to hold out of camp. This came as a stunning move for Bills fans based on what Cook has said and done all summer.
Now, Buffalo is left in a bit of an odd situation. With just a month until the season begins, they cannot afford for Cook to miss reps with the first-team offense. However, they also cannot wait around to find a surefire starting back if Cook's holdout extends into the regular season.
Bills should consider Zack Moss reunion amid James Cook drama
Fortunately, the perfect running back option just became available for the Bills. Last week, the Cincinnati Bengals released Zack Moss as they continue to invest in younger talent at the position, and a reunion in Buffalo could be a match made in heaven.
Moss played his first two and a half NFL seasons with the Bills, tallying 1,236 all-purpose yards adn 10 touchdowns in 31 games. He may not be a one-for-one replacement for Cook, but he can take on the workhorse role and allow Ty Johnson and Ray Davis to do what they do best.
Neither Johnson or Davis are equipped to be a bellcow running back, but adding another player like Moss into the picture would keep their roles relatively similar until Cook eventually returns. Plus, Moss already has a rapport with Allen and a good part of the offense, even if the offensive coordinator has changed.

In 2022, it was the emergence of Cook alongside Devin Singletary that made Moss expendable in the first place. Fast forward a few seasons, and now the Bills may need Moss with Singletary long gone and Cook seemingly making a bold stance.
Through five NFL campaigns, Moss has totaled 558 attempts for 2,318 yards and 16 touchdowns. He's also an asset in the passing game, catching 98 passes for 710 yards and five touchdowns while only dropping 10 passes and fumbling five times.
Ideally, Cook and the team resolve their situation and the emerging star running back is ready to roll for the season. However, things seem to be trending the opposite way, and Buffalo needs to be ready for any situation. Cook provides an immediate bail out for the team given his familiarity.
