The Buffalo Bills have been very active thus far in free agency, adding big-name players such as defensive end Joey Bosa and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi (who is set to serve as six-game suspension). They also added some depth at a few positions.
Buffalo still has some holes to fill, however, and will continue to be active in the free agent market. There are still some decent players left in free agency, and Buffalo has approximately $10.7M in cap space, according to Spotrac. Let’s take a look at a few players Buffalo should look to sign.
Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr
The Bills traded away Kaiir Elam to the Dallas Cowboys and Rasul Douglas is currently a free agent. That leaves Buffalo with a gaping hole at the position, and will need to find a new starter this off-season. Asante Samuel Jr is still only 26 years old and won’t demand a big contract from his next team.
Last season he only played in four games while he dealt with a shoulder injury. However, in 2023 Samuel totaled two interceptions, 13 passes defended, and 63 tackles in 17 games. He also allowed 734 yards and four touchdowns in those games, per Playerprofiler. Spotrac projects Samuel to sign for $11.5M per year, meaning the Bills likely wouldn’t draft a corner early on and would start next to Christian Benford.
Pass rusher Preston Smith
The Bills added both Ogunjobi and Bosa to their pass rush, but could still use some help at the position, which is where Smith comes in. He’s been a solid player all throughout his career, totaling 70.5 sacks in 10 seasons. This past season, Smith played for two teams and totaled 4.5 sacks and six quarterback hits. At 32 years old, Smith still has something left in the tank and can be a solid rotational piece in this Bills defense.
Wide receiver Amari Cooper
Cooper has familiarity with Josh Allen and the offense, and at this point in free agency, won’t be demanding a huge contract. If Cooper is still available for much longer, the Bills could give him a call and offer him a short contract to allow the 30-year-old to test free agency again next year.
Unfortunately for both sides, Cooper’s time in Buffalo didn’t go the way they planned with Cooper dealing with a wrist injury. However, Cooper could look to run it back again with a proven offense. If so, a wide receiver room of Cooper, Joshua Palmer, Keon Coleman, and Khalil Shakir would do wonders with Josh Allen.
