Three Bills deserving of praise after Buffalo’s dominant 35-10 win over 49ers
Sunday night’s game provided fans with numerous talking points. Josh Allen’s incredible touchdown, the Buffalo snow, another injury for Christian McCaffrey or that the Buffalo Bills are legitimate Super Bowl contenders. While all of those are true, there were a few players that created their own headlines last night.
Greg Rousseau
Already having a bit of a breakout season, Sunday night was more of the same for Rousseau. He was consistently in the 49ers backfield, racking up three tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery. On top of that, Rousseau was a constant problem for the Niners offensive line and created pressure that won’t show up in his stat line. Rousseau sits at 6.5 sacks this season, and has shown no signs of slowing down.
Christian Benford
Buffalo fans are quickly realizing that the Bills may have a true, number one cornerback emerging on the roster. The former sixth round pick out of Villanova has made a name for himself in this league, and has never backed down from a challenge. On Sunday night, Benford had a pass breakup and a recovered fumble to go along with his stellar coverage. He was the leading part of a secondary that only allowed seven catches and 76 yards from the San Francisco wide receivers. The entire secondary will be tested over the next two weeks as the Bills take on the Los Angeles Rams and the Detroit Lions, both teams touting explosive wide receivers.
James Cook
While Allen’s touchdown run is getting all of the media love, Cook’s 65 yard touchdown run in the second quarter surely deserves some too. Although Cook eclipsed the 100 rushing yard mark for just the second time this season, he has truly evolved his game. Known more for his speed and elusiveness, Cook has shown his strength running between the tackles and picking up the chunk yardage that’s needed to keep defenses honest. He has rounded out his game and has also become a real touchdown threat. Cook currently sits at 11 touchdowns on the year, good for third in the NFL. He’ll try to keep the momentum going as they head to LA to face the Rams, a team that gives up on average 4.6 yards per carry and 144 rush yards per game.
Sunday night was a dominant performance from the Bills top to bottom, but these three guys stood out. It will be very interesting to see how Brandon Beane and the Bills front office decides to proceed with some of the big upcoming extensions, but for now the focus remains on getting to New Orleans.
