The Buffalo Bills 2026 season kicks off in only a few months, and the schedule release has brought new excitement. There are all kinds of different primetime matchups, a new stadium, and more, but fans have questions.
The year is now mapped out before us; Which games are the important ones? As the schedule looms, which games are bog standard, and which ones define the season?
Ranking the Bills most important games of their 2026 schedule
5) Week 2: Detroit Lions @ Buffalo Bills - TNF
This may not be the schedule-critical game that deserves to be on this list, but it has merit. The Lions are a tough opponent for the Bills, and it should make for a great game. The true importance of this otherwise ordinary game is its timing.
The Bills will open their new Highmark Stadium for it's first regular-season NFL action when the Lions come to town. As the standalone Thursday Night Football game, the entire league gets to experience the first Bills home game under the lights. It's not definitive of the Bills season, but it's an important look at their new home.
4) Week 4: New England Patriots @ Buffalo Bills - 1:00pm
The Bills and Patriots aren't really the explosive rivalry of the other AFC groups. The fight has always been rather one-sided, in favor of one team or the other. The Bills dominated the 90s, the Patriots had the 2000s and 2010s, and Buffalo has had the 2020's thus far. With the wind, that could change this season.
As uninspiring as they were last season, the Patriots have earned the opportunity to prove themselves more. There will be a chip on their shoulder, and the Bills need to bury it quickly.
3) Week 8: Baltimore Ravens @ Buffalo Bills - 1:00pm
Buffalo fell to the wild card spot last season, losing their division and having to battle for seeding in a meaningful way. This season, getting ahead of the competition is crucial. The Baltimore Ravens might not be as terrifying as they were just a year ago, but they are still a threat.
In the likely scenario where the Ravens win the AFC North, the Bills need that head-to-head win to break a tie. It's early in the year, after a bye week, against a team that fell out of relevance last year. Still, it's one of the most important games on the schedule.
2) Week 13: Buffalo Bills @ New England Patriots - 4:25pm
Considering the Bills have Week 14 and 15 in primetime, it would probably have been too much to ask for this one too. Still, it's the game that likely decides the race for the AFC East. Josh Allen and the Bills handled the Patriots last time they met in Foxborough, but the Patriots fell into a Super Bowl appearance.
The cream of the crop of the AFC could well be the winner of this game. It'll certainly be true of the AFC East.
1) Week 16: Buffalo Bills @ Denver Broncos - Christmas Day
There are a thousand reasons why this game is interesting. It's the Bills first game as part of the NFL's new Christmas Day slate, it's between two AFC powerhouses, it's a playoff rematch from last season's controversial finish. Pick one, and it's good enough to run with. We're taking this seriously.
Much like with the forementioned Ravens, the Bills project to be closely seeded with the Denver Broncos. Forget the intrigue, the narrative, or the Christmas magic; If this game determines playoff seeding between two competitors for the #1 spot, it's the most important game on the schedule.
