The Buffalo Bills didn’t have to wait until Thursday to know when they will play one of their 2026 opponents. Yesterday, it was confirmed that the Buffalo Bills would be having their home opener in Week 2 on Thursday Night Football against the Detroit Lions. The Lions may not have been the opponent that most Bills fans were expecting, but it’s a dynamic matchup between two contenders.
Buffalo’s first opponent in their new stadium that will be opening presents a great challenge towards the Bills. Even though the Lions finished last in their division, they still finished at 9-8 which tells you how brutal the NFC North was last season.
Since 2023, the Lions have emerged as a championship contender and they were close to making the Super Bowl back in 2023. Even with them missing the playoffs, they are still one of the better teams in the league.
Their most dangerous player that Buffalo will have their hands full is running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who is by far their best player on the team and has been great since his rookie season. Through three seasons, Gibbs has 3,580 rushing yards to go with 39 touchdowns on the ground. Even for as great as Gibbs is, the Bills should be glad that they have to face Gibbs early on in the season.
Bills being put to tough test against Lions' rushing attack is great for Buffalo
Buffalo’s run-defense was a mess last season, giving up 136 yards per game. It’s been their main weakness on the defense for quite some time now. With Jim Leonhard coming in as the new defensive coordinator and the scheme changing, fans are hoping that the narrative changes.
The Bills’ run-defense will be tested early against at minimum a Top 5 running back in the league. Buffalo will have the chance to see what they need to improve on when it comes to stopping the run. For as solid as Jared Goff is as a passer, his game is only great if Gibbs can move the chains himself early on.
Overall, Detroit is a tough team that is very physical under Dan Campbell and they are going to look to come into Buffalo and pull off an upset of the debut of the Bills’ new stadium. Buffalo will have the chance to set the tone early on in the season by taking down the Lions and showing the league that they aren’t going anywhere.
In addition, the Bills avoid having to play Detroit later on in the season when the hits become more painful and both teams may not be at full strength. This now-confirmed matchup is going to say a lot about Buffalo’s defense, which has had so many resources put into it for the second consecutive offseason.
