The Buffalo Bills' 2026 schedule showcases one of the toughest seasons in the league. With a projected strength of schedule of .528, ESPN ranks the team's calendar as 8th-hardest. It features some very tough matchups.
Things aren't as clear-cut as the strength-of-schedule metric makes them out to be; Some nuance is required to determine what makes a football game harder than another. Last season's wins is hardly a measuring stick for this season. Let's take a look at the toughest games on the Bills 2026 lineup.
Who will be the Bills toughest opponents in 2026?
5) Week 1: Bills @ Texans
As part of a tough early slate, the Bills open their season on the road against the Houston Texans. The Texans are a formidable opponent, capable of beating the Bills with their backup quarterback just last season.
This year, they're better, and they match up very well against the Bills. The Houston defense can do damage, and we'd rather not see them at all. Instead, Week 1 will but a brand new Bills team up against an immovable object.
4) Week 3: Chargers @ Bills
The Chargers come along at a tough time for the Bills. Buffalo opens new Highmark Stadium the week prior against the Detroit Lions, and then goes up against the New England Patriots right after. Timing doesn't help, but truly the Chargers are one of the tougher teams on the Bills' schedule.
Their new season, under Jim Harbaugh and new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, there's much to consider. Their defense is loaded with talent, and they've retooled several areas of their offense. The Chargers may not sound like a powerhouse, but they're a major threat in the AFC for 2026.
3) Week 15: Bears @ Bills (Saturday Night)
Directly following a Sunday Night Football appearance against the Green Bay Packers, the Bills host the Chicago Bears for Saturday Night Football. They also know, just 6 short days later, that they play on Christmas Day. That nightmare sandwich leaves us will a filling of both tough competition and the destruction of a perfectly good NFL schedule.
The Bears themselves are already a mighty foe. They won the NFC North last season, and got better despite trading WR D.J. Moore to the Bills this offseason. Truly, experience was their biggest flaw- The Bears will not be lacking experience this season.
2) Week 5: Bills @ Rams
There's a case for the Rams to be the Bills' most difficult foe this season, and it's a strong one. They went 12-5 in 2025, despite playing in the toughest division in the NFL. The Rams were narrowly beaten in the NFC championship game by the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. There's nothing to bring any doubt to their pedigree as one of the NFL's toughest teams.
For the Bills, the Rams are a bitter thorn. They overcame the Bills less than two seasons ago in one of the most thrilling and heartbreaking games in recent memory. That 44-42 thriller, highlighted by three pass and three rushing touchdowns from Josh Allen, is one for the record books.
This rematch won't be easier- The Rams are as prolific now as they were then.
1) Week 16: Bills @ Broncos
In a season where the Bills play the AFC champion New England Patriots twice, the Kansas City Chiefs on Thanksgiving, and Lamar Jackson's Baltimore Ravens, one would think any of those games would make the cut. They don't. Call it bravado, call it sense, call it whatever you like; Those games are far less fearsome to the 2026 Bills that this one.
The Bills must revisit the scene of their latest defeat, where the Denver Broncos ended Buffalo's playoff run a few short months ago. They must do it on Christmas Day, directly following two other primetime games. They must do it on their second-consecutive short week. The team must do it as the final stop on a brutal late-season stretch featuring four 2025 playoff teams and the Kansas City Chiefs.
On top of all that, the Denver Broncos are now further established in their system. Bo Nix enjoyed another successful season at quarterback, quickly becoming a star in this league. They own a defense so powerful the Bills simply hired one of the men behind it. As far as 2026 goes, there's no tougher game for the Buffalo Bills.
