This is the time of year where teams across the NFL can file a proposal for a potential new rule change. Now, whether it gets granted or not is another story. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t. The Buffalo Bills are no strangers to rule changes.
The most infamous rule change that was made because of the Bills was allowing both teams in the playoffs to get a shot at being on offense in overtime. We all remember what happened in the 2022 AFC Divisional Round playoff game between the Bills and Chiefs…it went into overtime and a coin toss that went in the favor of the Chiefs kept Josh Allen and the Bills from getting the ball, despite the game turning into a thriller in the 4th quarter.
That rule now benefits every team going into the playoffs, seeing as how they are guaranteed to get the ball atleast one time in overtime. However, a recent proposed rule change could very much affect Josh Allen and the Bills for the worse.
Proposed rule change from Green Bay Packers could affect Bills negatively
The Packers have proposed a new rule change that would ultimately get rid of the infamous “tush push” play that both the Bills and Philadelphia Eagles utilize heavily considering who they have at quarterback. The Eagles and Bills tend to be very successful when utilizing the tush push and now there’s a chance it could be gone. Quite frankly, it shouldn’t be banned.
It’s not like every team is doing this and it’s up to the defense to find a way to stop it. It’s no different than a simple QB sneak. Now granted, not every team has a big quarterback like Hurts and Allen, but there is nothing stopping a team from doing their own tush push play.
If this rule change does get granted, the Bills won’t be able to utilize Josh Allen’s frame to pick up one to two extra yards on a third-down or fourth-down conversion. It may very change how Joe Brady and the offense operate in short yardage situations.
