Updated depth chart after Buffalo Bills select Cole Bishop

The Buffalo Bills safety position is going to look very different from what fans have come to know since Sean McDermott took over as head coach in 2017. That offseason, the Bills would sign free agents Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde and those two would be the starters for the past seven seasons and be a big reason for their success over the that time frame.

However, the Bills decided this offseason it was time to make a change and they would release Jordan Poyer, who would sign with the Miami Dolphins. As for Micah Hyde, he is still a free agent and could return but it likely would be as a backup.

After those moves, the Bills would re-sign Taylor Rapp to a three year deal and then sign former Bucs and Chiefs safety Mike Edwards to a one-year deal. These two moves didn't make safety a huge need as both can get the job done but they are far from locks, especially after the selection of Cole Bishop in the second round.

Starters: Mike Edwards and Taylor Rapp
Backups: Cole Bishop, Damar Hamlin, Kendall Williamson

Cole Bishop certainly has the talent to be a starting safety immediately for the Buffalo Bills and it wouldn't be surprising to see him beat out Mike Edwards for the job. However, the coaching staff are not going to rush him out there with the veterans they have on the roster.

As of right now, the depth chart doesn't change and Rapp and Edwards should be the starters. However, Bishop should get on the field in sub-packages as a third safety that plays in the box and can utilize his tackling.

This certainly could all change by midseason if Bishop develops and can take over the starting job but right now this should be the depth chart.
