Reason #3: Poona Ford could be a long-term answer at the position

As mentioned earlier, the Buffalo Bills don't have any defensive tackles under contract past this season. Unless there are significant changes, it seems unlikely that any would be returning in 2024.

The most notable player is Ed Oliver, who was the first round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, but he has been inconsistent to start his career. If he has a breakout season, he probably receives more in free agency than Buffalo could afford. If he remains inconsistent this season, then the Bills probably are not interested in a long-term deal.

The most likely to be re-signed past this season would probably be DaQuan Jones, who was excellent this past season. However, he will be turning 32 years old at the end of the season and the Bills probably won't consider anything more than another one or two-year deal.

However, Poona Ford is only 27 years old and the Buffalo Bills could have signed him to a prove-it type deal. If he plays well this upcoming season, a longer deal would make sense for both sides and he could be one part of the position for the next few years.
