It wasn't long after the news came out that the Buffalo Bills were trading Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans that new Texans' running back Joe Mixon took to X, the app formerly known as Twitter, and welcomed Diggs to Houston. However, the message was a very clear indication that Diggs requested this trade, more on that in a later article. There has been a ton of speculation about this, but given the financial ramifications, it's a bit surprising the team made the move. Buffalo will now carry a dead cap hit of nearly $32 million.
The cap hit is the sixth-largest dead cap in league history and the most for a non-quarterback. Things must have gone south at One Bills Drive if Brandon Beane and the organization were willing to take this hit and move on. Since the deal, a lot has been made of Diggs' significant decline in production over the last half of the season and the playoffs, but why? Why did the numbers drop off so greatly? This is a question we may never know the answer to.
The Bills will have their work cut out for them for the remainder of this offseason. Every move Brandon Beane makes will be met with scrutiny, by both fans and the media. Will Buffalo be able to address the need at wide receiver? Will the existing group of Khalil Shakir, Curtis Samuel, and Dalton Kincaid be enough? I do not doubt that Buffalo will be adding another receiver via the coming 2024 NFL Draft, maybe even two. I also have a feeling that Beane isn't done and has a plan. I don't see him making this move, without already having other options in the works.
