Grading Josh Allen's horrific Week 5 performance vs. Texans

Buffalo Bills fans will go another week of sadness after witnessing a heartbreaking loss to the Houston Texans, watching the Bills lose 23-20 off of a Texans’ game-winning field goal. This is their second loss of the season and it was against a team that they could see in the playoffs (assuming that they even make it).

It is easier to talk about what didn’t go wrong for the Bills because it is such a short list. On the long list of what went wrong for them, quarterback Josh Allen needs to be on it. This was a very uncharacteristic game by Allen and he truly looked like a rookie quarterback in his first ever NFL game.

Allen finished the game 9-of-30 for 131 yards and one score. He set the wrong kind of history for the lowest completion percentage (30%) off of 30 pass attempts in the last 30 seasons, according to Alaina Getzenberg (per ESPN stats info).

Allen’s one highlight of the day came in the third quarter on a 4th-down conversion where he connected with wideout Keon Coleman for a 49-yard touchdown that brought the Bills back within three points. Other than that, Allen’s performance was miserable.

One piece of credit that Allen does deserve is his toughness. In the fourth quarter, Allen was brought down to the ground and his head smacked off the ground and it looked like the Bills were going to finish out the game without him. It turned out that he would only miss one play after getting cleared to return.

Week 5 was a performance to forget about for Josh Allen

Week-in and week-out, Allen usually has a solid game that either gets the Bills ahead or he makes a comeback for Buffalo. This time, the Bills had a gut punch with his performance as he played like the worst quarterback in the league.

This is now the second game where Allen looked lost and his supporting cast didn’t help him much. Allen will have a little bit of time to get prepared for Buffalo’s Monday Night Football game next week against the New York Jets, but Allen has a history of struggling against them. If he carries this kind of play into MetLife Stadium, it’s going to be yet another long day for Allen and the offense.
