Backup Quarterback

For the first time in Josh Allen's career, the Buffalo Bills do not have an experienced backup behind him.

Kyle Allen has proven inconsistent throughout training camp. Unsteady performance from a quarterback during training camp is a concern. The preseason is crucial for quarterbacks to demonstrate their skills, grasp the playbook, and build chemistry with their teammates. Kyle Allen has proven capable but an upgrade shouldn't be out of the question, especially on a roster like Buffalo.

The Bills have championship aspirations. If Josh Allen misses time for any reason, a backup should be able to keep the ship from sinking on the season. A team built like the Bills should have a competent backup to do just that.

The Bills released quarterback Matt Barkley with an injury settlement and signed Shane Buechele to its practice squad. Buechele went undrafted in 2021 and spent most of the past two seasons on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad. Buechele could take some time to get up to speed in Buffalo's offense. But he's received high praise regarding his development from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.

The Bills need a backup quarterback who can fill in when needed and not derail the season. If Josh Allen misses time, Buffalo could be looking to sign a veteran off the street.
