Christian Benford - Cornerback

Benford entered OTAs and was in a battle for corner number two, with both Dane Jackson and Kaiir Elam ever since. Jackson has largely been running with the first team in each of the preseason games; however, Benford has done nothing but show he deserves the opportunity as well.

Benford got the start as a rookie over the first-round pick Elam in the season opener a year ago and the two seemed to rotate in and out until an injury ended Benford's season. I truly believe that had the injury not occurred, Benford would have eventually taken hold of the starting role.

Per PFF, the best run defender of the three was Benford with a score of 86.7. His coverage grade of 68.2 was second among them, with Jackson the best. The overall grade went to Jackson as well with a rating of 79.7 but Benford still had a solid overall grade of 74.1. Even though Jackson had the highest coverage grade, he also had the worst run-defense grade, significantly lower with a score of 61.5. For what these guys bring to the field, Benford has shown to be the best all-around corner and in my opinion, has earned the CB2 role, but we will have to wait and see.
