3) Sean McDermott will have the defense in the best position
In today’s day and age of the NFL, offense is king and all the new top head coaching candidates are offensive-minded. In fact, of all the teams that are currently ranked as having the best odds in the NFL to win the Super Bowl, Sean McDermott is the only defensive-minded head coach. When you’re heading into a monster matchup with the hottest offense in the NFL, you want a defensive guru leading the charge, and McDermott is that.
Throughout his years as the Bills head coach, having now coached 100 regular season games, McDermott has proven to have great game plans to take away the best players on the opposing team. His most recent, holding last year’s NFL rushing yards leader, Josh Jacobs of the Raiders, to negative rushing yards in week two.
McDermott, who always had a big say in the defense, is now calling the shots as the Bills’ defensive coordinator. Under him, this defense has gone from a laid-back "keep everything in front of you," defense, to an attacking one. Through three weeks, it appears this could be the best defense the Bills have had in the McDermott era.
A lot of fans are harsh critics of McDermott, but it is a fact that the guy knows how to gameplan and win games. Bills fans should feel extremely confident that McDermott is going to have an effective plan to slow down this red-hot Dolphins offense. Since McDermott became the Bills head coach, they have faced Tyreek Hill five times in the regular season. In those five games, Hill only has 28 catches, for 226 yards and just one touchdown. He averages five catches, for 45 yards against McDermott’s defense.
McDermott game plans and watches so much film that he regularly spends the night in his office at One Bills Drive. Last year, the Bills held Hill to two catches for 33 yards in the first meeting. Keep in mind, in that game Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, and Tre’Davious White, did not play. In the second game that season, they held Hill to 69 yards. McDermott will have a game plan for this Dolphins offense that is led by Tyreek Hill.
