The Buffalo Bills’ second preseason game was one to easily forget as the team just simply underperformed in a 38-0 blowout loss. A big reason why the Bills got shutout is because of the pathetic quarterback play by both Mitch Trubisky and Mike White.
The backup quarterback position is up for grabs going into this Saturday’s final preseason game but after Week 2, I would be very surprised if Trubisky didn’t already have the QB2 battle won already.
White was way worse than Trubisky against the Bears and that might have been the final chance for White to capture the backup spot. Since Trubisky has already backed up Josh Allen for two seasons, it would make sense as to why he would be the backup for another season.
Despite Trubisky being better in Week 2, NFL analyst believes QB2 competition is still alive
Christian Gonzales from NFL.com had one takeaway from some of the Week 2 preseason games including the Bills vs. Bears, and Gonzales’ takeaway about the Bills was “[Mitch] Trubisky, [Mike] White are still fighting for QB2 in Buffalo.” Here’s a bit on what Gonzales said about this ongoing competition:
"The Bills rolled with Mike White as the starter against the Bears. It wasn’t White’s best outing as the journeyman signal-caller struggled to find any rhythm with his receivers not getting much separation. White completed 4 of 11 passes for 54 yards, leaving a lot left to be desired in the first half. Meanwhile, veteran Mitchell Trubisky, who started his career in Chicago, couldn’t separate himself from the QB battle. Trubisky did find some success with Frank Gore Jr. in the passing game to get down the field but failed to put any points on the board for Buffalo."Christian Gonzales, NFL.com
Gonzales does have a point. Trubisky didn’t do himself any favors after White’s horrible performance, but he did look a lot more comfortable in the pocket. He helped the offense move the ball better and he actually led the team to multiple first down conversions.
He knows the offense better than White and has the experience over him. Even though Gonzales is saying that this competition is still alive, it would be very shocking to see Trubisky not be named the backup to Allen leading up to the regular season.
