The Buffalo Bills drop to 0-2 in the preseason after getting shut out by the Chicago Bears, 38-0 in an embarrassing fashion. Even though this was preseason, this game was tough to watch and it was bad from the opening kickoff to the final whistle.
After being in a competitive battle against the New York Giants in their first game, the Bills now seem to have a lot more questions than answers going into their third and final preseason game in Tampa Bay. There were not a lot of positive takeaways, but the Bills had some players who shined a little, but the majority were disappointing.
2 winners and 4 losers from Bills' loss vs. Bears
Winner: P Brad Robbins
The biggest winner of this game for the Bills was the punter, Brad Robbins. He was very busy, having to punt six times and he averaged 48.8 yards per punt, pinning the ball twice inside the Bears’ 20-yard line. He also had a long punt of 62 yards. His hang time was great and it was even mentioned on the broadcast about how high he got the ball up in the air.
Winner: CB Jordan Hancock
For the second straight game, the rookie defensive back out of Ohio State continued to shine a bit for a defense that was pathetic. Jordan Hancock led the Bills in total tackles and had one nice behind the line stop at the goaline. He did suffer a shoulder injury so that will be something to monitor throughout the week.
Loser: QB Mike White
The QB2 battle should be officially over and Mike White definitely lost his lead with a horrible outing against the Bears. He went 4/11 for just 54 yards. The Bills had just one first down when he was under center and there was no rhythm whatsoever. Unless he plays like an MVP candidate on Saturday against the Buccaneers, he should miss out on a final roster spot.
Loser: S Cole Bishop
The second-year safety out of Utah has been struggling to stay healthy during the last two training camps and this performance against the Bears showed how much work he has to do to play catch up. Cole Bishop was penciled in as a starter next to Taylor Rapp for Week 1, but that might not be the case now.
To be honest, there still might be a battle between him, Damar Hamlin, and Darrick Forrest. Bishop had a rough outing in coverage against the Bears’ starters which questions whether or not he should be a starter for the Bills.
Loser: OL Ryan Van Demark
I specifically put Ryan Van Demark on here because when you have back-to-back false start penalties, it’s nearly impossible to come back from that. Van Demark hurt the Bills badly on one drive with those penalties. He’s been an underrated backup for the Bills before and while he should make the roster as a backup, his rough outing against the Bears could make a big impact when the Bills are trimming down the roster.
Loser: All of the backup OL
Sticking with backup offensive linemen, the entire backup group struggled against the Bears pass rush and did not protect the quarterback well. It’s a good thing that the Bills have the starters they have because should an injury pop up, the unit could start to hurt a lot.
