The Buffalo Bills rebounded from their Week 14 loss in a massive way by putting up nearly 50 points on the Detroit Lions and handing them their second loss of the season and first since Week 2. Josh Allen put on a clinic in the win, as he so often has this season, throwing for 362 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 68 yards and two more scores.
On the year, Allen now has 3,395 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, and just five picks while rushing for 484 yards and 11 touchdowns with his legs. In the past, Allen's been out of the MVP running due to his inability to take care of the football but that hasn't been the case this year. He's playing at an elite level, has the Bills in prime position to hopefully take over the number one seed, and that has led to ESPN's Dan Orlovsky declaring that "The MVP race is over".
"In 2024, No. 17 is running away with this and that's saying a lot because Saquon Barkley and Lamar Jackson are having tremendous seasons. What this dude is doing right now is absolutely unbelievable. Four hundred yards. Four touchdowns. No interceptions. No sacks. No fumbles. He's done it in back-to-back weeks. Nobody in the history of the NFL has done that."
Josh Allen might have officially ended the MVP debate for 2024
A few weeks ago there might have been a stronger argument for the race to continue, as, like Orlovsky mentioned, Saquon Barkley and Lamar Jackson are both putting together incredible campaigns this year as well. That being said, no one is even close to replicating what Allen is doing.
With the Bills finishing the season against weaker opponents, Allen will have a chance to put the finishing touches on his MVP campaign but the race should indeed be over. Even with a bad game over the next three weeks, he's done enough this season to show why he deserves it.
More Bills news:
If Allen does indeed win the MVP award, it'll be the first of his career and the first time a Bill has been crowned Most Valuable Player since Thurman Thomas won it in 1991. The Bills went on to reach their second of four straight Super Bowl appearances that season and well, we don't need to discuss how that went.
Hopefully, the Bills having the MVP winner on their team leads to a fifth Super Bowl appearance and can also lead to an eventual Buffalo Bills Super Bowl championship.
