Without having Josh Allen under center, the Buffalo Bills would not be anywhere near the championship contender status that they are currently at. When the Bills traded up to draft him in 2018, it created a mixture of emotions because of the high-upside and risk that Allen had to his game.

It was a bumpy first two years, but there was more promise than risk. Then it all clicked in 2020 when Allen took a huge step forward and solidified himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the league. As time went on, he has put together a great case to be considered the best quarterback in the entire league.

Josh Allen gets recognition that Bills fans already knew

Dalton Wasserman and Max Chadwick from Pro Football Focus (PFF) created a QB rankings list heading into 2026 and they said exactly what Bills fans already knew about about Allen. Wasserman and Chadwick have Allen at the top of the QBs list going into the season.

"Following a sluggish first two years of his career, Allen has been on a heater ever since. He has earned a 90.0-plus PFF grade in six straight seasons, becoming the first quarterback to accomplish that feat since PFF began charting in 2006. The 2024 MVP has recorded 141 big-time throws over the past four years, 23 more than the next-closest quarterback. His 79 career rushing touchdowns are already the most by a quarterback in NFL history, surpassing Cam Newton‘s previous record. The only thing Allen is missing now is a Lombardi Trophy." said Wasserman & Chadwick.

It’s not just about the stats, it’s also about how Allen changes the game each and every week. It’s rare to not see Allen make some kind of big highlight play that fires up the Bills for an entire game. Whether it’s because of him throwing the ball in a tight window, or using his legs to make plays, Allen makes life miserable for opposing defenses.

He had five consecutive seasons of 40+ total touchdowns from 2020-2024, and he had 39 total last season. For the past two seasons, he has been doing it without a true No. 1 receiver and he also won an MVP award while doing it.

I get it, there’s times where he tries to do too much. At the same time, he’s been put into decisions where he has to carry the Bills in ways that you don’t want to see a quarterback do it.

This upcoming season will be the first year where Allen has a new head coach in Joe Brady, but the duo have worked together since 2022 so the continuity will be there.
