Despite the excellence that the Buffalo Bills have showed this decade, there have been some big-time flaws that have hurt them in the playoffs. The wide receiver room that past two seasons as been just below average at best, and the defense has been a major liability for as long as fans can remember.
General manager Brandon Beane has taken on a ton of criticism for the way the roster has been constructed the last few years, and some of it is well-deserved. Specifically, the wide receiver room has been a mess and it plays a major role as to why the Bills have dropped games in the regular season and even in the playoffs.
Last season at the trade deadline, Bills fans were hoping that Buffalo would have made a splash at wide receiver and acquire extra help for the offense. Instead, they failed to do so and Beane had to answer some tough questions as to why the Bills weren’t able to acquire more help.
Going into this offseason, Beane had to prove himself to the fans of why Terry Pegula chose to keep him and not Sean McDermott. First, Beane had to find a new head coach and he made the choice to promote Joe Brady from within. Then they had to fill out the roster in free agency and in the NFL Draft.
Despite the major changes that the Bills went through, the organization had a great offseason with new additions and their roster is being highlighted by Sayre Bedinger from NFL Spin Zone.
Brandon Beane's work with Bills roster gets high praise ahead of 2026
Bedinger put together a power rankings list of every NFL roster from worst to best heading into the season, and not only were the Bills ahead of the every team in the AFC East, but they were ranked No. 5 only behind the Seahawks, Texans, Broncos, and Rams.
"Buffalo's roster is really balanced on both sides of the ball, and led by superstars on the offense. Of course, Josh Allen doesn't need any introduction. He's a perennial MVP candidate, who is joined in the backfield by James Cook, a perennial NFL Offensive Player of the Year candidate at this point." said Bedinger.
"Buffalo has a fantastic offensive line, and they have the pieces defensively to win a championship, especially in the secondary. The biggest question right now is whether or not they have the pieces in the pass rush department to make a deep run. They added Bradley Chubb in free agency and TJ Parker in the NFL Draft to try and address those questions." Bedinger added.
Buffalo's roster has never been terrible overall, but what they did lack was a huge weakness. Now that they have DJ Moore in the offense, and a solid young receiver in Skyler Bell, the wide receiver room looks a lot better. Then they added some key defensive pieces in free agency and through the draft, giving Jim Leonhard a lot to work with in his first year as the defensive coordinator in Buffalo.
I'm not saying that Beane has been perfect because he certainly has his faults. But overall, Beane has done a great job at building this roster especially on offense. Now that he has fixed the wide receiver issue and brought in a ton of help on defense, the Bills' roster looks a lot better going into 2026.
