For the first time in his NFL career, Josh Allen will have a new head coach. Since 2018, Allen was under the leadership of Sean McDermott but now with Joe Brady stepping in as his replacement, changes have already been made and they will still be coming.
Even though Brady is a new head coach, he has been at One Bills Drive since 2022 where he started out as the quarterbacks coach, working his way up to offensive coordinator and now the head coach.
When McDermott fired former OC Ken Dorsey in the middle of the 2023 season, Brady was the one who stepped in as the play caller and he didn’t look back. He helped Allen and the offense get out of the funk that they were in, implementing an “everybody eats” offense which allowed for everyone to be part of the gameplan.
Then despite not having a true No. 1 receiver the last two seasons, Brady still managed to help Buffalo have one of the best overall offenses and Allen became an MVP under him. Brady was bound to become a head coach, and the Bills decided to make sure that he wouldn’t bring his talent somewhere else.
HC/QB power rankings ignores what Joe Brady and Josh Allen have built
Lou Scataglia from NFL Spin Zone ranked every head coach/quarterback duo heading into the 2026 season and the duo of Brady and Allen landed at No. 15, which isn’t the worst for a first time head coach, but it also ignores what this duo has done together already.
"This is the first time Brady is taking the reins of an NFL team, so there is simply a lot of unknown at play here. You would think that being an assistant for years in the NFL would help transition Brady into this role, so it would not be a major surprise if that was indeed the case and the Buffalo Bills didn’t really skip a beat." said Scataglia.
"Allen and Brady will likely end up leading the Bills to double-digit wins, but with how many solid head coaches are in the league right now, being ranked 15th is about as high as we can slot them at the moment." Scataglia added.
So, to put this duo in the middle of the pack creates a little bit of frustration because they already have continuity and Brady has shown to be a phenomenal play caller without having a true No. 1 option on the outside. Not to mention, he brought back the rushing attack that the Bills haven’t had in a long time.
Deciding to put this duo in the middle of the list, again, is not the worst thing. However, it ignores what this duo has done for the last couple of seasons. Now with Brady being the head coach, he does face pressure of controlling the entire team but there should be confidence from fans because Brady knows the expectations that he is stepping into.
