The Buffalo Bills are one of the ten teams that experienced a head coaching change this past offseason. The last time that they changed head coaches was in 2017 when they went from Rex Ryan to Sean McDermott. It’s been quite some time since the Bills went through a massive change like this.
Now, McDermott is out while his offensive coordinator in Joe Brady is running the team. Brady was bound to be a head coach sooner than later as he was getting interviews the last two cycles, but the Bills opted to roll with him.
Brady isn’t just the new head coach for the Bills, he’s a new head coach overall. However, he faces immense pressure to succeed considering that he’s already been in the building the last couple of seasons and who he has at quarterback. Change can be scary, but the change from McDermott to a new head coach was needed considering that the Bills weren’t going far with McDermott.
Joe Brady has to prove himself as brand new head coach of Bills
In a power rankings list created by Sayre Bedinger of NFL Spin Zone, Bedinger ranked every AFC team’s head coach going into the 2026 season. To no surprise, Brady was ranked near the bottom at No. 14 ahead of Todd Monken of the Browns, and Jeff Hafley of the Dolphins.
"The Bills are shifting gears in a dramatic way, going with a rookie head coach in Joe Brady, who was previously the team's offensive coordinator. Not only is Brady a first-time head coach, but he'll have a first-year NFL defensive coordinator in Jim Leonhard. The Bills are taking a big risk in such a competitive window, but they're hoping the offensive wunderkind can push them over the top." said Bedinger.
However, I wouldn’t have put Brady near the bottom of the list. Quite frankly, I would actually have ranked Brady as the “best rookie head coach” considering that he has already worked with Josh Allen since 2022, and he has helped produced one of the best overall offenses despite not having a true No. 1 wideout the last two seasons.
At the same time, Brady’s placement on any head coaching ranks shouldn’t be at a high spot because he is a first-time head coach. That’s just the way it is. He has a long road ahead of him in order to be considered one of the best in the league. It’s one thing to control one side of the ball, and it’s another to control the entire team during a game. That’s where Brady will be closely watched by fans.
