It’s been well known that Keon Coleman has not been great for the Buffalo Bills. In the last two seasons, Coleman has had just two games of over 100+ yards in a game (once in each season) including last season’s home opener against the Baltimore Ravens where he had 8 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown.
Many Bills fans had thought that Coleman was primed to officially become the offense’s new No. 1 target for Josh Allen. Obviously, that didn’t happen as Coleman wasn’t just unproductive on the field, but he was a healthy scratch due to maturity issues in the building.
It felt like Coleman was on his way out of Buffalo in some fashion once Sean McDermott was fired, but he is still on the roster and has been publicly supported by Joe Brady. Even though he has been given that recognition, it doesn't ignore the fact that the Bills traded for DJ Moore and drafted Skyler Bell in the 4th round of the this year's NFL Draft to bring more receiver help for Josh Allen.
Keon Coleman enters crucial 2026 season with Bills (but what if he delivers?)
Seth Walder of ESPN has made a projection about Coleman this season that would show tremendous improvement, which includes him setting career highs in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns:
"Wide receiver Keon Coleman will record 750 or more receiving yards and at least five touchdowns -- both career highs. Earlier this offseason I thought there was a decent chance he'd be on a different team by now. But Coleman also hasn't been that bad in his first two years, posting a 49 overall score in ESPN's receiver score (just below average) and 1.6 yards per route run." said Walder, ESPN.
This would obviously show Bills fans great improvement from Coleman which is what they definitely want to see. At the same time, if Coleman were to reach these numbers (or even better), that would put the Bills in a tough spot with him going into the 2027 season.
Bills could have to make tough Keon Coleman decision if he thrives in 2026
The 2026 season will be Coleman’s third season in the NFL, meaning that going into the 2027 season, he could be playing on the final year of his rookie deal. Since he was not a first-round pick in 2024, he doesn’t have a fifth-year option that the Bills can pick up. They will need to decide after the 2026 season on what to do with him and his future with the team.
Since Coleman has not been impressive at all the last two years, things don't look exactly the greatest as far as his future with the Bills. At the same time, if he impresses big time this season, it would be a great sight for fans, but it would also put the front office in a tough spot as far as what to do with his contract situation next offseason.
