Riddle me this: When does something impressive also become normal? When Josh Allen is your team’s quarterback.
In Thursday night’s 41-31 win over the Detroit Lions, the Buffalo Bills star’s performance continued to put himself in rarified air. For the fourth time in his career, he threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more.
What’s even more insane about that statistic is that only one other player has done that in a game more than once and that was Kordell Stewart who “only” did it twice.
It took Josh Allen just two games to create more NFL history
Seeing Allen do that not only speaks to the brilliant start he’s off to in 2026, but also to how special his play has been over the past three seasons.
It was less than a year ago when Allen last put up those numbers. He threw and ran for three each in the Bills’ win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last November. Much like Thursday’s game, it was another high scoring affair on both sides with Buffalo winning 44-32.
The first time came during Allen’s 2024 MVP-winning campaign.
It was in a shootout against the Los Angeles Rams. In what was a monstrous day, Allen threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns and was also the team’s leading rusher with 82 yards on the ground and three more touchdowns. Somehow, the Bills lost that game 44-42. Allen was responsible for every single touchdown in that game, which is still hard to comprehend despite the loss. In fact, it’s even more incomprehensible the Bills lost that game.
For his first 3+ passing/ 2+ rushing touchdown performance, we have to go all the way back to the final game of his rookie season in 2018. You could say this performance was a teaser for what Allen and Buffalo were about to unleash on the NFL.
Allen threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more in a 42-17 blowout win over the Miami Dolphins. The Bills finished with a dismal 6-10 record in then-coach Sean McDermott’s second season, but Allen gave a taste of what he could do. It seems crazy now, but a lot of people thought the Bills made a horrendous decision taking Allen with the 7th overall pick that season and didn’t think his skills would translate well to the professional game.

Each week it seems like there’s a new benchmark that Allen is setting. His scintillating start to this season serves as a reminder how fortunate Bills fans are to have him leading their team. It’s only been two games but Allen has to be considered the (still insanely early) frontrunner to win his second NFL MVP award.
So what will #17 do for his next trick? We’ll have to wait another week to find out when the Los Angeles Chargers come to Highmark Stadium. In the meantime, fans have some extra time to soak in yet another masterful performance by Josh Allen.
