There are only a few select quarterbacks that are considered the best ones in the NFL in today’s game. You have Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, a healthy Joe Burrow, and then you have Josh Allen. I still remember when the Buffalo Bills traded up to select Allen 7th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft and it caused a ton of mixed emotions. Now, no Bills fans bat an eye when it comes to the greatness of Allen.
Since coming to Buffalo, Allen has helped take the Bills to the playoffs for seven consecutive seasons (which include five AFC East titles). He has proved to be one of the best dynamic playmakers with both his arm and his legs. Heck, he has even shown the ability to catch passes for touchdowns.
He is what makes Buffalo a powerhouse and as long as he is playing in his prime, the Bills aren’t moving away from their championship window anytime soon.
ESPN QB rankings proves what all Bills fans knew about Josh Allen
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler helped create a list of QB rankings, based on what executives, scouts, and coaches ranked for quarterbacks heading into the 2026 season, and right at the top of the list at No. 1 is Allen. Right behind him was none other than Patrick Mahomes, and then in third was the reigning MVP in Matthew Stafford. Joe Burrow was ranked 4th, and Lamar Jackson ranked 5th.
"Allen took advantage of the composite voting, averaging a ranking of 2.10 per ballot. That helped him overcome his 34.1% first-place clip, slightly below Mahomes' 41.5%. One NFL general manager perfectly summed up why Allen -- the only player in NFL history with at least 200 passing touchdowns and 50 rushing touchdowns -- belongs at the top, though." Fowler said.
"Multiple coaches credited now-head coach Joe Brady -- Allen's offensive coordinator the previous two seasons -- with streamlining Allen's game and implementing a scheme that accentuates his strengths. Allen's three seasons with at least 25 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns (all over the past three years) are the most in NFL history." Fowler added.
From 2020-2024, Allen scored 40+ total touchdowns in each season making him the first player to ever do that. Last year, he had 39 total touchdowns so his dominance didn’t go anywhere. Allen's dominance first started in 2020, when the Bills had acquired Stefon Diggs from the Minnesota Vikings and it hasn't gone anywhere since.
For the last two seasons, Allen hasn’t had a true No. 1 receiver to throw to, and yet he helped the Bills win their 5th consecutive division title in 2024 (in Week 13), he won his first NFL MVP award, and he carried the team once again last season with an even worse receiving group around him.
Bills fans already knew that Allen was the best quarterback in the league, and now the rest of the league does too, with this ranking coming out. With Allen still getting the chance to work with Joe Brady, who is now his head coach, there’s no reason to doubt what Allen can keep doing with this offense.
