When the Buffalo Bills traded up in the 2018 NFL Draft to acquire Josh Allen, the biggest hope that fans wanted to come true was that Allen would become the first franchise quarterback that the team has had since Jim Kelly. Prior to Allen, the quarterback position was put through a revolving door…then Allen changed everything.
Since 2020, Allen has helped the Bills win some big games, become an MVP candidate every year, break both NFL and franchise records, and has ultimately become the best player in the league. He's got the eye-popping stats, the unreal highlights, and he has the MVP award that he won back in 2024. Allen also has five AFC East championships under his belt.
The only thing that is missing for Allen is a Super Bowl, which he has been striving to accomplish since coming into the league. With Allen being the best quarterback, it’s a shame that he hasn’t won a Super Bowl. In fact, he hasn’t even played in a Super Bowl which is just unbelievable. Especially since guys like Drake Maye and Sam Darnold, have already played in one.
Bills haven't supported Josh Allen enough to reach Super Bowl
With that being said, Allen hasn’t been the reason why the Bills haven’t made it to the Super Bowl. Throughout his playoff career, he has proven to the NFL world that he is one of the best playoff quarterbacks. Last I checked, he doesn’t play defense, and it’s been Buffalo’s defense that has fallen apart in all of their playoff losses since 2020.
However, Sayre Bedinger from NFL Spin Zone has a different approach about how Allen will need to rewrite his "ugly playoff narrative" and it's extremely surprising.
"The time has come for Josh Allen to prove -- in the playoffs -- that he's one of the all-time greats at the position. The AFC West has stood in his way for his entire NFL career." said Bedinger.
"The unfortunate narrative for the former league MVP is that he can't get the job done in big games. And in order to carry that kind of pressure, you obviously have to play well enough to get in those big games year after year. That's the reason why Allen is on this list, and not players like Lamar Jackson or Joe Burrow." Bedinger added.
Now granted, the Divisional Round loss against the Denver Broncos did Allen no favors. He had four turnovers that contributed to the loss in overtime. At the same time, Allen still managed to put up three touchdowns and he actually helped the Bills take the lead in the 4th quarter. Then Bo Nix and the Broncos completely embarrassed the Bills’ defense to take the lead late in regulation.
The Bills did end up tying the game to force overtime, but then a controversial interception ended up bouncing in Denver’s favor which helped them beat the Bills. With that being said, the other playoff losses that the Bills have had this decade has not been Allen’s fault.
The defense for the Bills had a reputation under Sean McDermott to play to not lose, rather than stay aggressive from start to finish. In addition, the Bills have given up no less than 27 points in each of their playoff losses this decade. Remember 13 seconds against the Chiefs? How about the crucial moments in 2023 and 2024 where they let the Chiefs get into scoring position because they took advantage of the zone coverage defense?
You can say what you want about the Bills and their playoff struggles, but to say that Allen has a narrative change because he “can’t get the job done” is just ridiculous.
