It’s time to wake up, Bills Mafia…it’s gameday! The Buffalo Bills are set to host their regular season home finale against the New York Jets and they have the chance to lock up the second-seed in the AFC playoff picture. Should the Bills leave Week 17 with a win, it would make sense for Sean McDermott to rest his starters next week when Buffalo goes to New England.
Not only does this game have playoff scenarios up in the air, but the MVP race seems to be back on between Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. Both superstar quarterbacks were drafted in 2018 and they are always mentioned in the MVP conversation. Jackson has two MVPs in his career while Allen is looking for his first one.
Throughout this season, Allen became the front leader for the award but Jackson has been making a run at Allen the last couple of games. However, Buffalo’s superstar quarterback has the chance to stay ahead of Jackson in Week 17 against the Jets.
Josh Allen setup to set two records in Week 17 vs. NY Jets
Fans have seen Allen set records throughout this season, whether it is franchise history or NFL overall. He will have the chance to do it again today against a Jets defense that has been awful throughout this season.
According to the Buffalo Bills PR X account, the first record that Allen can set is becoming the first player in NFL history with five consecutive 40+ touchdown seasons. All he needs is two total touchdowns. That is more than doable for Allen. As far as within Bills’ history, if Allen scores one rushing touchdown, he can tie former Bills running back Thurman Thomas for the most rushing touchdowns in team history (65).
The fact that Allen can, and will set the record for the most rushing touchdowns in franchise history is unbelievable to think about. He’s well in his prime and he has about 4-5 more years of great football left in him, assuming he stays healthy.
On the other hand, being the first player to have 40+ touchdowns in five straight seasons should put Allen ahead in the MVP race with Jackson. Since 2018, Jackson has only had 40+ touchdowns in a season twice in his career, yet Allen is about to make it his 5th consecutive season of doing it. Not to mention, Allen helped lead the Bills to their 5th consecutive AFC East title in Week 13.
There’s so much more that Allen has done rather than Jackson this season. Unless Allen completely falls apart in these next two games, he should be voted as the MVP award without question.
