Thursday afternoon was supposed to just be about the Buffalo Bills’ new head coach, Joe Brady. Brady was introduced as the franchise’s 21st head coach at a press conference, and his quarterback, as expected, was in attendance.
Unfortunately, Josh Allen’s first public appearance since the heartbreaking loss in Denver wasn’t as heartwarming a sight as Bills Mafia might’ve hoped. Their quarterback showed up to the press conference on crutches, with a walking boot on his right foot.
Shortly after the press conference, Allen answered questions concerning his injury.
Josh Allen eases Bills Mafia’s injury fears with reassuring update
“If we had a game this week, I would be playing this week. Absolutely. You kidding me?”
“I had a broken, little broken bone in there, so they went in, took it out, cleaned it up.," he said. "Obviously, not an ideal situation, painful throughout the weeks, but, again, gameday, a different story, being able to just put that to the side and just go out there and play football.”
Allen clarified that the injury was an older injury that was re-aggravated in the Week 16 win at Cleveland. Allen had surgery on Monday in Birmingham, Alabama.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported soon after Allen was seen on crutches that Allen’s surgery “was a procedure on the fifth-metatarsal avulsion,” and that it comes with an 8-10 week recovery period. Allen confirmed that the injury was to his fifth-metatarsal, and even proved he could spell the name of the bone that caused him such discomfort late in the season.

Allen made a surprise cameo during Brady’s interview on The Pat McAfee Show and assured Bills Mafia and the NFL world that he’ll be ready to go next season, telling McAfee, “We’ll be gravy,” for all activities this offseason.

It’s as good a sign as Bills fans could hope for that Allen’s foot is on schedule and that he’ll be a full go when it’s time to put the pads back on. And it’s no surprise that he can wear a walking boot on a late-January Thursday and say confidently that he’d be on the field on Sunday if there were a game to play.
Of course, there are no games to be played for Buffalo for another eight months. But, in the meantime, Bills fans can take comfort in the quarterback being on track to lead the Bills into the next era under Brady’s new direction.
