Buffalo Bills fans can’t wait to see their new-look Bills take the field in Week 1, and one of the main reasons is because the team is going to look a lot more different than it has in the last decade. The new era under Joe Brady has initiated a bunch of changes this past offseason for both in the coaching staff and roster.
Training camp is underway at St. John Fisher University, and there has already been some insight about specific players, and the overall vibe with Brady in charge instead of Sean McDermott.
One of the coaches on Brady’s staff has been highlighted; defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, who Ian Rapoport gave Bills fans some insights that have added to the overall hype surrounding Leonhard in his first year with the Bills as their defensive play caller.
Leonhard was the Bills’ overall biggest acquisition because he has the biggest problem to solve, which is finding a way to make this defense not a liability in crucial times, like it was under Sean McDermott in big moments.
Even though Leonhard has a lot of new players to work with, and even though the Bills did go heavy on defense again, Leonhard recently told the media something that should be catching Brandon Beane’s attention.

According to Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News, Leonhard “acknowledged there are ‘depth concerns’ across the Bills’ defense.” Lysowski added that “clarity will come as intensity and physicality increase in camp” and that the question was about the boundary corner.
Since there are still so many unknowns (roles, snap counts, rotations, etc.) before the pads come on, Jim Leonhard acknowledged there are “depth concerns” across the Bills’ defense.

The fact that Leonhard made a comment about this is concerning, and it should be motivating Beane to bringing in more help. Beane did mention that the Bills and current free agent Tre’Davious White do keep in contact, so maybe it’s just a matter of time before White does eventually comes back to the Bills. However, it’s not official until something comes up.
Cornerback depth was a big problem at one point, but the signing of Dee Alford and drafting of both Davison Igbinsoun and Toriano Pride Jr. helps bring extra depth. At the same time, this is training camp. The Bills should be looking to bringing in as much competition as possible. Heck, cornerback isn’t even the only position that could still be a concern.
Inside linebacker is still a major problem. The Bills didn’t add a ton of extra help on the defensive line other than Zane Durant. Again, for Leonhard to make this statement truly shows what Buffalo still needs to do prior to the start of the regular season.
It’s only been two days of training camp, but eventually, the coaching staff is going to need to truly evaluate the players and see who is worthy of bringing onto the final 53-man roster. Not to mention, injuries do happen. The last thing Buffalo needs to deal with is just bringing in training camp guys to finish out the summer. No, there needs to be more help that is real competition.
