The Buffalo Bills had a huge addition to their organization that didn’t involve adding a player via trade, free agency, or the NFL Draft. Yes, the Bills added DJ Moore to boost their wide receiver room. They also revamped their defense with new additions that will bring more intensity. However, their biggest addition by far was landing Jim Leonhard as their new defensive coordinator.
For nine years, Bills Mafia has either seen Sean McDermott, Bobby Babich, or Leslie Frazier call the defense. While there were some great moments, the defense has been the team’s biggest liability for the team in crucial moments in the playoffs.
Now that McDermott is gone and Joe Brady is stepping as the head coach, there will be a new defensive scheme under Leonhard.
Adding Jim Leonhard brings a new (and needed) vision
The addition of Leonhard was a home run hire for the Bills for two reasons. First, he has been part of the Denver Broncos' coaching staff that has helped the defense become one of the best in the league overall. Not to mention, Leonhard has been around some of the league's best players like Patrick Surtain II.
Secondly, Leonhard brings a totally different style than what McDermott had. In this new 3-4 scheme, the Bills should be more aggressive with rushing the quarterback. With their pass-rush being very inconsistent in recent memory, that should change under Leonhard. Fans were already excited when Leonhard was hired, but Ian Rapoport from ESPN and NFL Network has given Bills fans another reason to be excited for Leonhard's presence.
Bills' defense set to look way more different under Jim Leonhard
Rapoport had the chance to attend the Bills’ first day of training camp, and he later reported on NFL Network varies topics that included a “less predictable defense” under Leonhard.

“Bringing in Jim Leonhard for a defense, that my understanding, when they did the coach search, they really found that a lot of their feedback was their defense was too predictable. Jim Leonhard, one of the top defensive coordinator candidates around he ends up getting hired by the Bills. There’s a lot of excitement there. What he can bring, the attacking style, the versatilness, there’s a lot of optimism with this new staff.” said Rapoport.
Rapoport is spot on about the predictability when it comes to Buffalo's defense. The defense seemed to always play not to lose. They weren't as aggressive as the game went on, but they would try to play it safe. You could always tell what coverage they were going into and quarterbacks were able to pick them apart.
Leonhard will now have the chance to correct the mistakes that the Bills' defense has made in the past. If he can fix the issues quickly, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get some head coaching looks next offseason.
