There’s a never-ending debate about who’s the best quarterback in the league, and the most common names currently occupying the discussion are Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen, Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson, Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow, and Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes. Those four are the consensus top four, and their fans are always ready to debate why their guys in No. 1.
On Tuesday, Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase decided to jump in the discussion and advocate for his quarterback being the top guy. In an appearance on the Up & Adams show, Kay Adams asked Chase why Burrow deserved a 99 rating in Madden, like Allen already has. The star receiver explained how the Cincinnati quarterback does everything well, before saying Burrow’s tape is different from Allen’s tape.
Chase’s next comments, however, seemed like more of a slight to his quarterback, as he tried to make a comparison to the Bills QB. The receiver said teams game plan against Josh Allen, but when they face the Bengals, they game plan against Burrows’ weapons. To many people, that made it seem as if Allen was the top threat to defenses, and in Cincinnati, the offensive weapons are priority No. 1, even before Burrow.
Give Joe Burrow a 99-rating!!!

Ja’Marr Chase says the quiet part out loud on the difference between Josh Allen and Joe Burrow
So when Bills fans heard the comment from Chase, they were able to emphasize how that’s the exact point they’ve been making this entire time. Fans who argue Allen over Burrow frequently make the point that Allen is the engine in Buffalo, and he carries the Bills offense. While Burrow is also elite, he’s able to lean on elite offensive weapons, a luxury Allen doesn’t necessarily have.
To be fair to Chase, though, his comment can also be interpreted to mean defenses focus on trying to stop Allen because they can, whereas with Burrow, they don’t even attempt to stop him because it’ll be easier to try and slow down his weapons. That’s likely the interpretation Bengals fans will cling to, but Chase might have just slipped up and made Bills’ fans point for them.
