The Buffalo Bills had themselves a bit of a scare on Saturday in training camp went C.J. Gardner-Johnson went down with a lower leg injury. The biggest and immediate fear that came to fans was whether or not Gardner-Johnson had suffered an achilles injury that could take him out for the entire season.
The good news is that Gardner-Johnson is that he just has a lower calf strain, which is definitely the better option than what it could have been. However, we will need to wait and see how he progresses and recovers from the injury. It's not something you want to mess with.
There is still plenty of training camp to occur, and then you also have the preseason. Oh, that’s right, you also have the entire regular season and the playoffs (if you make it). While teams have plans on how they will achieve their goals for the season, one factor that always screws it up is injuries.
The Bills were just put in a situation where they had to wait and see if an injury would cost them an impactful player for this season. While they managed to avoid that scenario, they should be looking to be proactive to make sure that they are never short on depth.
Former Bills fan-favorite says exactly what fans need to hear
Former Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson took to X where he believes that the Bills should be looking to add depth and “load up on DBs”. Johnson talked about how Gardner-Johnson "is an active defender that has also led his team in tackles." Then finishing it off about how the Bills were three days into camp and there was already an injury scare.
CJGJ is an active defender that has also led his team in tackles. #Bills 3 days into camp and we get a scare…

This won’t be the only. Load up on DBs
Depth is key. It’s time to sign guys imo.
I know that it’s not great to be reactive right away, especially when you consider the fact that Gardner-Johnson should still be ready to go sooner than later. However, all it takes is just another injury or two before the Bills find themselves in a very tough spot and have to bring in guys on short notice.
Bills should be looking to bring in more defensive depth ahead of Week 1
Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard recently talked about the concerns with the depth on the defense, and now the Bills were staring at a scenario where they could have lost an impactful player before they had the chance to show what they are about. I don’t see how the Bills can continue on in training camp without bringing in more depth.
This would be the perfect time to bring in someone like Tre’Davious White, who doesn’t just know what the expectations are for the Bills, but Brandon Beane told the media that the Bills are always talking with White. If that’s the case, maybe the next conversation should be what it would take for White to sign with the Bills and come to St. John Fisher University to finish out training camp.
