The change in the defensive scheme for the Buffalo Bills is something that fans are excited and curious for heading into the 2026 season. For nearly a decade, fans have watched Sean McDermott’s 4-2-5 defense be the main scheme and while it has its strengths, the philosophy of “bend don’t break” didn’t work in crucial moments.
Now with a new scheme and new players added to the mix, the defense is looking to change the narrative of what has placed on them about how they have been the team's biggest liability.
Under Jim Leonhard, the switch to a 3-4 defense is a great idea, but a lot of fans were wondering how some players would fit into the scheme. One player specifically was Ed Oliver, who has only played in one defensive scheme his entire NFL career. The good news is that Leonhard believes that Oliver can be disruptive in this new defense, but it will be up to Oliver to produce.
Ed Oliver gives direct forward answer about new defensive scheme
Per Mike Catalana, Oliver was asked about the new defense and about “getting freed up this year with a new defense”, in which Oliver replied “When you get your matchups, you got to win”.
“In a sentence, it’s coach talk because last year I was supposed to be more free. The thing about it is, when you get your one-on-ones, when you get your matchups, you got to win.” said Oliver.
“It’s not that I wasn’t free before, you have to win your matchups. It seemed like every time I win, get a sack or something, oh, he was in the right position, well that’s not really the case, I just beat my one-on-ones.” Oliver added.
Is it schemes or players? Ed Oliver was asked about getting freed up this year with a new defensive.

To me it's Ed's version of the great line by DaQuan Jones "Sometimes it's just one man whupping another man". #BillsMafia pic.twitter.com/CqCL466oSj
Oliver missed most of last season due to different injuries, so the first priority is making sure that he stays healthy. Then you added in the defensive scheme, Oliver has received praise by Leonhard on what he can bring to the unit. It’s hard to imagine Oliver lining up in the nose tackle spot, so there is a chance that we could see him lined up more wide out in the trenches.
At the end of the day though, Oliver has to do what he says, and that is to win the matchup in front of him. The switch on defense might be a great fit for him, but he is going to have to get more creative with how he wins his battles.
