Buffalo Bills training camp is coming up this week, with the first practice happening on Wednesday, July 23rd. The team will be featured on Hard Knocks as well to go along with the surrounding hype within the team. Buffalo, once again, is truly a Super Bowl contender but this year feels a little different.
There is more talent and a lot more depth as well. Barring any major or a lot of injuries, the Bills have no reason to not go all the way. Even though there is a lot of excitement surrounding this team, one of the toughest parts of the job that the front office has to do is trim the roster down to 53 players. Some players may not get the chance to be part of potential greatness, including some familiar faces that fans know really well.
3 potential training camp cut candidates for Buffalo Bills
S Damar Hamlin
Even with a solid season under his belt last year, the Bills brought back Damar Hamlin on just a one-year deal worth $2 million. This gives the Bills flexibility to release prior to the start of Week 1 if he underperforms or if someone like Darrick Forrest out-performs him in training camp. Hamlin has quite the story in his Bills journey and he is absolutely beloved in Buffalo.
But at the end of the day, the NFL is a business and the Bills feel that they have better options, Hamlin could be playing on another team in 2025.
DT DaQuan Jones
This might be a bit of a stretch, maybe even a hot take. However, let’s not forget that the Bills brought in a lot of defensive tackles this offseason which includes Larry Ogunjobi and rookies T.J. Sanders and Deone Walker. The Bills also have Ed Oliver and DeWayne Carter as well and they aren’t going anywhere.
DaQuan Jones is entering the final year of his contract with the Bills and Buffalo can save some money by releasing him. Due to Ogunjobi being suspended for the first six games, I believe that Jones will end up being on the roster but the possibility of him being released is still there.
WR Laviska Shenault
One potential sneaky signing the Bills made was with wide receiver/return specialist Laviska Shenault. He’s been a bit of a journeyman throughout his career as a former second-round pick. While he has the chance to potentially compete for the WR6 spot, his best chance might be at kick/punt return and if he can’t perform at a high level with that, then he could become an easy release candidate.
