The Buffalo Bills held a press conference Wednesday morning, with team owner Terry Pegula and general manager Brandon Beane speaking to the media, and it was pure chaos. From contradicting statements to throwing people under the bus to Pegula and Beane clearly not being on the same page, the presser was so chaotic that the announcement that Josh Allen might need surgery wasn’t even the top story.

Amid all the other attention-grabbing things that were said, Beane revealed that Buffalo’s star quarterback could possibly have a procedure on his foot soon. However, the general manager said Allen should be ready for OTAs, even if he does need the surgery. While that’s a great prognosis, it’s still a bit concerning to hear that the team’s quarterback could be undergoing a procedure, and Bills fans will likely be nervous until he’s back on the field and healthy.

Bills annouce Josh Allen might need a procedure on his foot

While the sports world has made a habit of downplaying procedures, the old saying that ‘there’s no such thing as a minor surgery,’ remains true. If Allen does indeed need surgery, everyone will hope it’s an easy hurdle for him to clear, and that he’d be back on the field by OTAs. However, a hope is all that is, especially when the team is shaping the narrative.

One unfortunate scar sports fans have picked up is to never trust teams’ characterizations of injuries — especially when it comes to quarterbacks. Throughout history, franchises have always downplayed their quarterbacks injuries, and given these hopeful timelines which are never met. It infamously happened with Indianapolis Colts quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, whose situation deteriorated into them never playing another down for the Colts.

Allen’s situation isn’t in that territory, but that speaks to how fans just have to wait and see. Even looking back to the start of this season, with Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams. Stafford had a back issue that the team was very cagey about. He ultimately started all 17 games and had an MVP-caliber season, but there was a point when no one really knew the status of his health.

Hopefully, things won’t get there this offseason with Josh Allen. With a new coach coming in, it’ll really benefit him and the team if he’s healthy and available all offseason.
