Brandon Beane just proved he clearly isn't on the same page as Terry Pegula

The Buffalo Bills had another heartbreaking loss in the playoffs this season, but they were still considered a stable franchise — just one that couldn’t get over the hump. Now, days after the loss, Buffalo’s reputation is no longer the same. The team fired Sean McDermott as head coach, which was heavily criticized, and the joint press conference on Wednesday by team owner Terry Pegula and general manager Brandon Beane only made things worse.

Beane showed up to the press conference prepared to do what most general managers do in front of microphones: take accountability while also defending themselves, and giving stock answers for the most part. Pegula clearly had a different plan. The owner spent time pretty much throwing Sean McDermott under the bus, calling out players, and criticizing officials.

In one of Beane’s responses, he said that he bears guilt, blame, and responsibility, making it clear that there is no finger pointing going on. However, Pegula didn’t get the memo. The team owner jumped in on a question about Keon Coleman, directed at Beane, to say that the coaching staff pushed to draft the receiver, and the wideout wasn’t Beane’s next choice.

Pegula wanted to highlight that as an example of the general manager being a team player and taking the input of coaches, but in reality, the owner just threw his previous coaching staff under the bus and ostracized a young player who is still on the team’s roster.

Beane eventually added to the conversation, saying Coleman was his pick, insisting that he wouldn’t turn in a card for a player he didn’t believe in as well, and that was clearly the general manager still trying not to point fingers. Pegula also tried to walk the statement back, saying his point was that every draft pick is usually a decision between multiple players, even Josh Allen. However, the damage had already been done.

That was just one of many somewhat concerning moments in the press conference from the team owner. From Pegula saying his decision to fire McDermott was a result of the loss to the Denver Broncos, to emphasizing that he didn’t fire a coach based on a bad officiating decision, to circling back and saying the team fell short because of a bad call, it was a bewildering press conference, as Beane had to sit there awkwardly. It’s safe to say fans aren’t confident in the direction the franchise is heading after Wednesday.
