It’s time to address the elephant in the room for the Buffalo Bills. They are coming off their first loss since October 6th against the Houston Texans. The biggest difference between that loss and the one they suffered against the Rams yesterday is that Josh Allen was a completely different player in both games. Against the Texans, Allen was a complete mess, going 9/30 in pass attempts. Against the Rams, he continued his MVP campaign and put himself forward even more with a six-touchdown performance.

Unfortunately, his heroics were not enough for the Bills to overcome a tough Rams team that showed up from start to finish. In a 44-42 loss, there is no other to blame put other than towards the Bills defense and defensive coordinator Bobby Babich.

Buffalo’s defense has been a great situational defense this year, but they seem to alwyas have to make adjustments. There’s one been a handful of games where they have came out of the gates and dominated right from the start. This matchup against the Rams showed that they could not adjust at all and it cost them big time.

Star wide receiver Puka Nacua couldn’t be stopped (12 receptions, 162 yards, 1 rushing touchdown), Kyren Williams and Blake Corum were bulldozing their way past the Bills defense and Matthew Stafford went untouched in this game avoiding getting sacked.

Buffalo’s defense was gassed and they had no answers for the Rams offense. Throughout this season, the Bills defensive line has been more of a liability than an asset. The run-defense is giving up 123 yards on the ground per game and guys like Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones have been a major disappointment this season. The Bills could have used someone like Jordan Phillips against the Rams, but he was ruled inactive with rookie DeWayne Carter coming back from injury.

After 2024 season, Buffalo Bills must priortize improving defensive line

Going into this season, the Bills’ biggest worry was their wide receiver room. No one is thinking that anymore. Instead, there should be major concern about the Bills defensive line. Oliver is a year moved from a career year and he’s been horrific this season. DaQuan Jones hasn’t been the typical run-stopper that he has shown he can be. DeWayne Carter is still a rookie and missed a good amount of time due to a wrist injury.

The Bills have to find a way to prioritize the defensive line this coming offseason. This run-defense for Buffalo has been their achilles heal for quite sometime and Brandon Beane needs to figure out how to stop teams from running all over the Bills.
