The wide receiver position for the Buffalo Bills hasn’t exactly looked the best the last few years, but the addition of DJ Moore this past offseason changes things for the better. Having a quarterback like Josh Allen and not having a true No. 1 receiver has been a ridiculous sight for Bills Mafia to see.
Moore coming on board will definitely help, and now the rest of the supporting cast can fall in line to help this offense elevate more than it already is. However, the wide receiver position has been so bad that anytime a new receiver comes to Buffalo (whether it’s free agency, trade, or through the NFL Draft), there seems to always be speculation on what that specific player could bring to the offense.
That shouldn’t always be the case, but it has, and it shows just how much Bills fans have missed out on seeing top receiving performances since Stefon Diggs.
Bills make two WR moves that should mean very little in training camp
After the second day of training camp, the Bills made a two roster moves involving separate wide receivers. First, the Bills ended up designating wideout Jalen Virgil as waived/NFI, and then the team had signed wide receiver Dante Pettis.

The Bills had brought in five players in for tryouts after practice on Thursday, per Alaina Getzenberg, and three of them were wide receivers; Pettis, KhaDarel, Hodge, and Isaiah Winstead. Buffalo ended up signing Pettis, but this move shouldn’t mean anything big for fans.
Pettis was drafted in the 2nd round in 2018 by the San Francisco 49ers, and it was his most productive season. His stats that year? He had 427 yards and 5 touchdowns. Since then, he hasn’t had more than 245 yards and 3 touchdowns in a season.
He spent three seasons with the 49ers, then spent two years with the Giants from 2020-2021. He was with the Chicago Bears for one year in 2022. Then in the last two seasons, he has been with the New Orleans Saints. This isn’t exactly the path a former 2nd-round pick should want to have.
Dante Pettis should be no more than training camp player for Bills
With Virgil being released, it was going to open up a roster spot so it wasn’t a surprise to see the Bills bring in another wide receiver. However, it is a bit surprising that Brandin Cooks wasn’t the one that was signed, seeing as how he has made it clear that he wants to be back with the Bills.
We'll see how Pettis performs in training camp, and maybe he will surprise fans for the better. However, it's very unlikely that Pettis is more than just a training camp player for the Bills.
